Jessica: Hi everyone, welcome back to 5-Minute English Practice. I’m Jessica. Today, we’re going to learn how to make small talk at a dog park. This is a very common and useful situation in daily life, especially if you have a pet.
When you go to a dog park, you can meet other pet owners, talk about your dogs, and have simple, friendly conversations. In this lesson, you will listen to a natural conversation between me and a dog owner named Peter. We will talk about our pets, daily routines, and how we take care of them.
Let’s get started!
—
Jessica: Come on, Max, let’s go! You’ve been waiting for this all morning, haven’t you?
Peter: Hi there! Your dog looks really happy and full of energy today.
Jessica: Oh, thank you! He always gets excited when we come here. This park is his favorite place to run and play.
Peter: I can see that. He looks like he has a lot of energy to use.
Jessica: Yes, he really does. By the way, your dog is very cute. I love his short legs.
Peter: Thank you! This is Milo. He’s a corgi, and he’s also very active, even though he looks small.
Jessica: Hi Milo! You’re so adorable. I’ve always liked corgis because they look funny but also very smart.
Peter: That’s true. He’s smart, but sometimes he can be a little stubborn, especially when he wants to do his own thing.
Jessica: I understand that. My dog Max is a golden retriever, and he’s very friendly, but sometimes he gets too excited and forgets to listen.
Peter: How old is Max?
Jessica: He’s about two years old now, so he’s still young and very active.
Peter: That’s a great age. Milo is three years old, so he’s a bit calmer, but he still loves to run and play.
Jessica: Yes, I think this age is perfect because they are still playful but easier to manage than when they were puppies.
Peter: I agree. Puppies are cute, but they need a lot of attention and training. Did you train Max yourself, or did you take him to a training class?
Jessica: I trained him myself at home. I taught him basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come,” but it took a lot of time and patience.
Peter: That’s really good. I also trained Milo myself, but sometimes he still doesn’t listen, especially when he sees other dogs.
Jessica: Yes, Max is the same. When he’s excited, it’s like he forgets everything I taught him.
Peter: Exactly! It’s like they are too happy to focus.
Jessica: How often do you bring Milo here?
Peter: I usually come here three or four times a week, mostly in the morning or late afternoon when it’s not too hot.
Jessica: That’s a good schedule. I try to bring Max here every day if I can, because he really needs exercise.
Peter: Yes, exercise is very important, especially for active dogs like ours.
Jessica: If Max doesn’t get enough exercise, he becomes restless and sometimes does silly things at home.
Peter: I understand. Milo behaves much better when he has time to run and play outside.
What do you usually feed Max?
Jessica: I give him dry dog food in the morning, and sometimes I mix it with wet food in the evening. I also give him some healthy snacks.
Peter: That sounds like a good diet. I feed Milo something similar, but I try to control his portions because corgis can gain weight easily.
Jessica: That’s true. I also try not to give Max too many treats, even though he always looks at me like he wants more.
Peter: Yes, they are very good at asking for food.
Jessica: Do you take Milo to the vet regularly?
Peter: Yes, I take him for a check-up once a year, and I make sure he gets all his vaccinations.
Jessica: That’s great. I do the same for Max. It makes me feel more comfortable knowing he is healthy.
Peter: Exactly. It’s better to prevent problems than to treat them later.
Jessica: Do you groom Milo yourself?
Peter: I try to brush his fur at home, but sometimes I take him to a professional groomer.
Jessica: That’s the same for me. I brush Max regularly, but I still need help sometimes.
Peter: Yes, especially when they don’t want to sit still.
Jessica: Max doesn’t like bath time at all.
Peter: Milo doesn’t like it either. He always tries to run away.
Jessica: Max looks like he wants to play with Milo. Is that okay?
Peter: Of course, Milo would love that.
Jessica: Great, they look like they’re having fun already.
Peter: Yes, it’s always nice to see dogs enjoying themselves. By the way, do you live near this park?
Jessica: Yes, I live just a few blocks away, so it’s very convenient for me.
Peter: That’s nice. I live a bit farther, but I still come here because it’s a great place.
Jessica: Yes, I really like this park because it’s clean and there are many friendly people.
Peter: I agree. It’s always nice to meet other dog owners and have a short conversation. By the way, there is a small pet-friendly café not far from this park, and I usually take Milo there after our walk when I have time.
Jessica: Oh really? That sounds interesting. What is it like?
Peter: It’s a cozy place where both people and dogs can relax. They have outdoor seating, and dogs are welcome to move around.
Jessica: That sounds amazing. I think Max would really enjoy that.
Peter: Yes, Milo loves it there because he can rest after playing and sometimes meet other dogs.
Jessica: That sounds like a perfect way to relax after the park.
Peter: Exactly, and they also have coffee, tea, and snacks for people.
Jessica: That’s great. I’d love to try it.
Peter: Maybe we can go there together one day if you’re free.
Jessica: Yes, that would be really nice.
Peter: How about this weekend? We can meet here first and then walk to the café together.
Jessica: That sounds like a great plan. I’m usually free on weekends.
Peter: Perfect. Then let’s do that.
Jessica: I’m looking forward to it.
Peter: Me too. It’s always nice to meet new people.
Jessica: Alright, Max, it’s almost time to go home.
Peter: Milo, say goodbye!
Jessica: It was really nice meeting you today.
Peter: It was nice meeting you too. See you this weekend!
Jessica: See you!
