Hi everyone, this is Jessica. Welcome back to 5-Minute English Practice!
Today, I’m going to share with you a very real and relatable topic—my day doing housework. If you want to improve your English vocabulary about daily routines and chores, this episode is perfect for you. Let’s get started!
So, yesterday was my “housework day.” I didn’t have to go to work, and I decided it was finally time to clean and organize my apartment. Honestly, I had been putting it off for a while, so things were starting to get a bit messy.
I woke up around 8 a.m., and the first thing I noticed was how cluttered my room looked. There were clothes all over the chair, some books on the floor, and my desk was a complete mess. I told myself, “Okay, Jessica, today is the day. No more procrastinating.”
I started with making my bed. It sounds simple, but it really makes a big difference. Once the bed was neatly made, the whole room already looked a little cleaner. Then I opened the windows to let in some fresh air. I love doing that in the morning—it just makes everything feel more refreshing.
Next, I began to tidy up my room. I picked up all the clothes and sorted them into two piles: clean clothes and dirty laundry. The clean ones went back into the closet, and the dirty ones went straight into the laundry basket.
After that, I decided to do the laundry. I separated my clothes by color—whites and darks—because I didn’t want anything to get stained. Then I loaded the washing machine, added some detergent, and started the cycle.
While waiting for the laundry, I moved on to dusting. I grabbed a cloth and started wiping down all the surfaces—my desk, shelves, and even the window sills. It was surprising how much dust had built up. I guess I hadn’t cleaned properly in a while.
Then I vacuumed the floor. I went over every corner of the room, especially under the bed and behind the door. Those are the places where dust tends to hide. After vacuuming, the room felt so much cleaner and more comfortable.
Once my bedroom was done, I moved to the kitchen. Honestly, the kitchen was the worst part. There were dirty dishes in the sink, and the countertop was a bit greasy.
I started by washing the dishes. I filled the sink with warm water, added dish soap, and began scrubbing each plate, bowl, and cup. It took some time, but I actually found it quite relaxing. After washing everything, I dried the dishes and put them back in the cabinet.
Next, I cleaned the countertop. I used a sponge and some cleaning spray to wipe away all the stains and grease. Then I cleaned the stove, which had a few oil splatters from cooking.
I also took out the trash. The garbage bag was already full, so I tied it up and brought it outside. Then I replaced it with a new trash bag.
After that, I swept the kitchen floor and then mopped it. Mopping always makes the floor look shiny and new. I really enjoy that part because you can see the result immediately.
By that time, the washing machine had finished. So I took the clothes out and hung them up to dry. I don’t use a dryer, so I usually hang my clothes on a rack near the window.
Then I moved on to the bathroom. Cleaning the bathroom is not my favorite task, but it’s very important. I started by scrubbing the sink and the mirror. Then I cleaned the toilet using a toilet brush and disinfectant.
After that, I cleaned the shower area. I used a cleaning solution to remove soap stains and make everything look fresh again. It took a bit of effort, but it was worth it.
Once I finished cleaning all the main areas, I took a short break. I made myself a cup of tea and just sat down for a few minutes. I was already feeling tired, but also very satisfied.
After my break, I went back to my room to organize a few things. I arranged my books neatly on the shelf, organized my desk, and threw away some old papers that I didn’t need anymore.
Then I folded the dry clothes and put them away. Folding clothes is not very exciting, but I like how neat everything looks afterward.
By the end of the day, my apartment was completely clean and organized. It felt like a totally different place. The air was fresh, everything was in order, and I felt much more relaxed.
Doing housework might seem boring, but it actually gives me a sense of accomplishment. It also helps me clear my mind and feel more productive.
