Hi everyone, welcome back to 5-Minute English Practice! It’s Jessica here, and today I want to tell you about the most delightful weekend I had recently. Last Saturday, I finally went to the zoo with one of my closest friends, Mia. We’d been talking about it for months—life gets busy, you know?—but we finally made it happen, and oh my gosh, it turned out to be one of those perfect, simple days that just fill your heart.
We met early in the morning at the zoo entrance, both of us carrying coffee and wearing comfy sneakers because we knew we’d be walking a lot. The moment we stepped inside, the air felt different—lighter, fresher, full of animal sounds and the faint smell of hay and popcorn. There was already that happy buzz of families and kids running around, but somehow it didn’t feel crowded; it felt alive.
We started with the giraffes, my absolute favorite. There’s something so gentle and majestic about them. One of them came right up to the feeding platform, stretched that long neck down, and looked straight at us with those huge, kind eyes. Mia and I both fed it some leaves, and I swear I felt my whole body relax just watching it chew so slowly and calmly. We stood there for ages, laughing and taking turns snapping photos, but mostly just being quiet together, enjoying the moment.
Then we wandered to the penguin exhibit. The little ones were sliding on their bellies across the ice, splashing into the water, and popping back up like nothing happened. Mia kept imitating their waddle, and I couldn’t stop laughing. There was this one penguin who kept staring at us through the glass, tilting its head like it was trying to figure us out. We named it “Curious Carl” and decided he was our spirit animal for the day.
We took a break for lunch at one of the little cafés—nothing fancy, just sandwiches, fries, and lemonade—but eating outside while watching flamingos on one leg and monkeys swinging from branch to branch made it feel like a picnic in paradise. We talked about everything: work, dreams, silly memories from high school, and even the little things that had been stressing us out lately. Being surrounded by animals somehow made all our problems feel smaller, more manageable.
In the afternoon, we went to see the big cats. The lion was sleeping in the sun, looking so peaceful and powerful at the same time. But then he woke up, stretched, and let out this deep, rumbling roar that vibrated through my chest. Mia grabbed my arm and whispered, “Did you feel that?!” We both had goosebumps. It was one of those moments where you remember how wild and beautiful the world really is.
By the time we left, the sun was setting, painting the whole zoo in soft golden light. We were tired—our feet hurt, we were a little sunburned—but we were so happy. On the way out, we bought matching keychains of tiny giraffes as souvenirs. We hugged goodbye at the gate, promising to do more of these spontaneous adventures.
That day reminded me how important it is to just… go out and play sometimes. To leave the phone on silent, to laugh at silly things, to be fully present with someone you love, and to let the simple joy of animals and nature wash over you. I came home feeling lighter, more connected, and honestly, a little more hopeful about everything.
So, listeners, when was the last time you had a day like that—just you and a friend, somewhere fun and full of life? Have you been to the zoo recently? What’s your favorite animal or memory from there? Share in the comments—I’d love to hear your stories, and it’s wonderful English practice too!
